Halimhazlin.com looks dodgy

halimhazlin.com smells like Akmal Ariff’s dodgy tsunamiwang. My impression is that the website looks unprofessional, and too much emphasis on the money side of things (see “kejayaan kami“), rather than on the “love of the product”.

Probably the contents of his CD (on how to start a home-based mail order business) is already available elsewhere, under a different title, by a different author. Possibly C&P-ed content too.
A better deal is this, if it’s that good: let me see the CD, if I like it, I’ll pay for it, no questions asked, no need upfront payment.

Phishing Barclays Bank

genuine.jpg

https://ibank.barclays.co.uk/olb/q/LoginMember.do

and

fake.jpg

http://ibank.barclaysco.com/olb/q/LoginMember.do

look similar.

The latter (phishers’ website) is still accessible at the time of writing.

Guidelines on smelling the fish (pun intended):

  1. banks will never ask for sensitive details by email. Barclays reiterated this point on its website. It’s almost funny that the phisher’s website links directly to Barclay’s security caution.
  2. banks will never simply send emails to anybody - if ever they send mail to you, it’s because you have an account with them. And if so, see rule 1.
  3. check with the bank website if there’s any warning. In Barclay’s case, it’s here.
  4. check online for news about such scam. in this case, searching via google should be a good start. A good example is this article at zincweb.co.uk.
  5. difference in domain name as compared to the original. In Barclay’s case, it’s barclays.co.uk turned into barclaysco.com
  6. login pages of banks are encrypted (https, with a reputable CA like Verisign). The fake site for Barclays is not. That means any information you filled in there can be read by anybody. Would you want that?

Sometimes it’s difficult to tell, if your browser is not updated.

Zulkifli Kadir, Irfan Khairi copycat?

To me personally, Zulkifli’s website does not look professional at all - too many fonts, unattractive layout, banal design etc.

Does that matter? Yes, it put me off totally.

If your expertise is translation, offer it to the whole world

Like these 2 ladies are doing, plus my own comparison of the two:

  • Ramona Ali
    • better at flaunting her qualifications marketing herself
    • been doing translations professionally since 2000
    • overall, charges dearer
    • can do 3500 words per day
  • Sophia Jusoff
    • more modest
    • been around longer (since 1997)
    • overall, charges cheaper
    • can do max 2500 words per day

So I suppose that if you want to go for it, you’d have to charge less than USD0.10 (about 40 sen) per word, and name your site cheaptranslation.com

Irfan vs Norazman: importance of choosing book titles that will convince buyers

Don’t do the same mistake as Norazman Abu Sahir at digital-reader.com with his book entitled “Rahsia pemasaran melalui Internet” (Internet marketing secrets). Do you think the book would’ve sold better had it contained the words “Jutawan” (Millionaire), like Irfan Khairi’s book.

Norazman’s book came out in 2003. Irfan’s book about 2 yrs later. Who’s more well-known now?

The most profitable investment is real estate

Something to ponder.

Even Irfan Khairi’s investing in it.

Irfan Khairi’s project copied?

Saifulsham.com’s (some kind of internet business “school”) first graduate, cheapestcovers.com looks very similar to Irfan Khairi’s reputedly most profitable of his 10+ e-businesses, ideabubble.com

Both do bookcover designs.

Cheapestcovers.com’s price is USD27, ideabubble.com’s is USD149.

Sen Ze’s “Mini-Encyclopedia of Low Cost-High Profit Internet Business Model” reviewed

The first question I’d ask when enthusiastically recommended some product is: “what are its disadvantages?” or “what are its weak points?”

Hence, I almost never read marketing brochures/advertisements etc. Instead, I’d refer to independent reviewers, or even better, its competitor. It’s rather fun watching competing companies try to cut each other down.

So, how does Sen Ze’s ebook costing RM97 fare under skepticism?

According to this guy:

My cousin just bought Sen Ze’s Mini-Encyclopedia on set up your (sic) very own low-cost, high-profit Internet Business. After reading, I found its not worth buying. All the things mentioned you can easily get from online free articles.

One best part which I hate it is that he mention www.dogsworld.net owner making a living with thr site. I’ve studied the website dogsworld.net & I find it is rediculous. If this site can earn more than enough to make a living, then all folks here will be millioniare by end of the month. Check out the site on your own see to believe.

I’m not trying to be harsh but His book is not worth even trying. Its a junk.

This looks like an authentic review of Sen Ze’s workshop

Sorry only in BM.

From a discussion forum in putera.com. Original link is here, see post no.25 in thread. His comment on Sen Ze’s book and seminar is on the 4th para:

Ni just pendapat aku laa.

Most of them yang buat pernigaan internet menjadi “kaya” adalah disebabkan menjual produk “know how / how to”. But kalau kita baca buku “know how / how to” 90% kita dah tahu even kalau kita ikut 100% satu persatu apa disarankan agak susah untuk berjaya.

Akuada beli buku dan pernah pergi seminar penulis terkenal Sen Ze pasal internet business. At the end of the day timbul persoalan kat kepala aku “Apa rahsia yang nak diceritakan???? apa yang ditulis semuanya common atau perkaa biasa dalam internet. Malahan hampir semua maklumat di dalam buku tersebut boleh di dapati secara MUDAH DAN PERCUMA di internet dengan menaip di google. So aku stuck kat situ .

..Bukan rahsia lagi namanya… So aku stuck lagi kat situ.

Most of them hanya TEORI but in real world…..

Inilah RAHSIA sebenarnya.

Ok sure benda ni pun akan merudum juga satu hari nanti sama macam jual produk know how/how to. Tapi kata orang “grab now before you loose”.

tsunamiwang.com sells an e-book and has an affiliate program. Costs RM50.

As expected, the e-book is available on the net as pirated copies…
Initially, it said 30 day money back guaranteed if not 100% satisfied. But in the FAQ section, it says:

Q: Boleh berikan maklumat yang lanjut mengenai jaminan wang di kembalikan?

[pls give more info about the money back guarantee]

[in essence, it says: if you cant prove to me that you at least tried to do what was described in the book, i will not refund your money]

Oo-er…alarm bells are ringing. For goodness sake, a money back guarantee is simply this: money returned to the customer, no questions asked!

Another exchange in the faq sounded very unprofessional to me:

Q: Saya ada jumpa bomoh yang boleh berikan saya nombor yang baik punya. Saya boleh bomohkan sesiapa untuk buat RM1 juta! [I've seen a witchdoctor/shaman who can guarantee that I will become a millionaire.]

A: tak berminat. [not interested]

I mean, it’s too obvious that that shouldn’t even be in the faq. And that is not the only one dodgy question in the faq. There’s more. Go on, read about it yourself.

To me, the ideal proposition would be this:

“Here, read my book for free. If you make money, then only you pay me. If you dont make any money, you can throw my book away.”

Impossible to be done? Well, dont u think BSN’s Sijil Simpanan Premium works in a similar way? Put you money on the line, you might win something. If you dont, you take back you money, no questions asked. Of course, they’d have made some profit by investing your money will it’s in their account, but isn’t that what’s called a win-win situation?

My first Hi-Fi

After vociferously devouring every hifi magazine for a year, reading almost every page of them, and several audition trips, I finally purchased my first real hi-fi in a shop in Chelmsford, Essex, United Kingdom.

It was chilly January 1989.

What was a skinny kampungan boy doing in a small, obscure and totally unknown part of Great Britain? Well, that’s a story for another day.

  • NAD 3020e 20W integrated amp (120 pounds)
  • Wharfedale Delta 30.2 speakers (80 quid)
  • Aiwa cassette player (150 quid)
  • some rather good speaker cables (white)

When I arrived home, in an even more obscure part of England, it was setup in the barn and the first thing played on it was Shakin’ Stevens’ “come see about me.”

Later i added a 2nd hand CD Player, from (now Dr) Danius Michaelides, a Marantz CD-40.

Still later, added a tuner and target speaker stands from cheap sales in and around London.

At the same time, i also had a sony walkman, bought a year earlier at Sungai Wang KL (i still remember that it cost me RM235 and the first tape played on it was a suspicious copy of Def Leppard’s Hysteria. That walkman was useful for dubbing tapes. There was no such thing as MDs, CD-R, Flash, PMP and of course DVDs at that time. Type I (and in crazier moments, Type II, and on ONE single occasion, Type IV) TDK tapes were all the rage then.

Incidentally, my first CD purchase was Bon Jovi’s New Jersey LP when it came out in 1988.

A Brunei friend gave me a literally Metal tape in the Summer of ‘89.

3 years later, in the summer of ‘92 I sold the set off component by component to finance my Eurorail adventure.

Kuok is at least twice as rich as anyone else in Malaysia

list.jpg

The most interesting league in Malaysia is not the football league.

“Sugar King” Robert Kuok Hock Nien is again the nation’s richest, for the third consecutive year, by twice as much as his closest rival, T. Ananda Krishnan.

The wealth of the top 40 individuals was assessed based on the value of their stakes in listed companies as at Jan 20.

According to Malaysian Business, on the whole, more tycoons see their paper wealth decline in 2006, due largely to the lacklustre performance on the KLSE.

The combined wealth of the 40 richest Malaysians increased marginally to RM79.42bil, compared with RM78.23bil a year earlier.

Unprecedented: Malaysian girls beat the Indons at badminton

As reported by thestar,

Malaysia’s women shuttlers created history last night, beating Indonesia for the first time in a team event and keeping alive their hopes of winning win a ticket to the Uber Cup Finals.

After a demoralising loss to Taiwan in the opening Group A tie on Wednesday, the spirited Malaysian girls rose to the occasion to defeat Indonesia 3-2 in the Asian Zone qualifiers.

Yesterday’s historical victory was earned through three straight points collected by Wong Mew Choo, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty and Norsyahliza Baharum.

The world number 12 Mew Choo notched a superb 21-11, 21-5 win over Fransisca Ratnasari.

Manila SEA Games champion Pei Tty-Eei Hui extended the lead with a 21-16, 21-17 win over 2001 SEA Games gold medallists Jo Novita-Lita Nurlita before youngster Norsyahliza carved a hard-fought 21-15, 10-21, 21-19 win against Maria Kristin Yulianti to seal the win.

National chief coach Yap Kim Hock was proud of the girls’ fighting spirit.

“Our strategy to move Norsyahliza to the second singles worked well.

“It was a great achievement, beating Indonesia in a team event for the first time,” he said.

Irfan Khairi’s online businesses

I’ve been reading Irfan’s book for a few days now.

His first one is map-of-malaysia.com , selling maps of Malaysia for about RM92 - I wonder how much the same map is sold on the streets of KL. Go over the site and learn.

Another one is of course rahsiainternet.com, selling his RM40 book, sent by PosLaju (cost of book includes poslaju cost)

Another one is ideabubble, but I’m not sure if ideabubble.com is it.

btw, credit card processor worldpay.com costs RM2000 to reg (one time payment). Payments will be channelled direct to your bank a/c. No hassle going to the bank to bankin cheques.

Read what some people discuss about him at putera.com (in Malay).

Bond Movie director Lee “Die (of Embarassment) Another Day” Tamahori…(3)

Scandalously fun.

The Rolling Stones enigma

_41298148_jagger300.jpg

At Superbowl XL on 5th Feb the Stones performed for 12 minutes during halftime.
You’ve heard the drill before: there are 4 Stones. The youngest Stone is 58. Lead singer/bandleader Mick is 62. Combined age is 246.

I find that extremely funny. Age limit for the 2000 participants allowed to dance on the field was initially set at 45! I mean, that’s only a bit younger than Mr Wood, or is that Mr Watts. Young men deemed less healthy than the haggard looking, 60 plus, grandfatherly-age, Keef?
I thought the Beatles had a more goody-goody image. But the Beatles broke up more than 30 years ago. Moreover, 2 of them are dead. But the Stones, with all the sex, drugs and rocknroll image, are still alive and kicking.

Then, of course, there’s the money.

Their 2006 tour of North America netted them RM615 MILLION worth of tickets. 42 concerts, 1.2 million people. Don’t tell me, yes, but that’s too much for a profession mostly associated with “playing”, rather than “working”.

Needless to say, it’s the most successful US concert tour of all time. Even giants like U2, Celine Dion are left behind.
Mind you, the average ticket price is RM216.

Extra tidbits

  • Old timers hog the top 5 in Pollstar’s list: Paul McCartney & Eagles round up the top 5. Actually, they’ve been doing that for years.
  • Celine Dion made about RM2 million on each of her 155 dates at Caesar’s Palace. Hmm…that makes Siti Nurhaliza’s reputed RM25,000 per show seem like peanuts.

What? Rod more famous than the Stones?

Apparently the Stones’ FREE concert on a beach in Brazil this Saturday will *only* attract 2 million people.

Check out the specs:

  • 10,000 police officers on duty
  • huge stage surrounded by 8 video screens
  • 16 sound towers
  • Live audio to US fans via radio & internet (that means Malaysia too???) + live video to 150 cinema screens across the nation

A daunting task for any Event Organiser.

“This is the biggest live show that has ever occurred in the world,” said Rio de Janeiro’s health secretary, Flavio Tanure.

Not so fast buster.

Rod Stewart ’s concert on the same beach 12 years ago drew an astonishing 3.5 million.

The Pope might not even attract that many people!

But one thing’s for sure, I’m gonna get da DVD.

The top selling Valentine card in the US

Top-Love-card.jpg

The card’s face is a deep red foil, with “For the One I Love” across the top in black script, a large picture of a red rose in the center, and a thick black ribbon cutting through the middle. Inside, it simply states: “Each time I see you, hold you, think of you, here’s what I do … I fall deeply, madly, happily in love with you. Happy Valentine’s Day.” Outsold the average card 5 times in 2004 and 2005. Designed by Marcia Muelengracht.

HOW long does it take a letter from Ipoh to reach Petaling Jaya?

Well, Huang Jun Hui’s letter took almost 20 years to reach his childhood friend Chin Kon Shian.

Sin Chew Daily reported that Chin’s 62-year-old mother was shocked when she opened the letter dated Aug 12, 1986, with his permission.

The cover of the letter was torn when it reached Chin’s family.

According to the daily, Huang, who was then in Form Two, wrote the letter to invite Chin and his family to his parents’ birthday dinner at their house in Ipoh.

Huang, now 35, moved to Ipoh with his parents when he was eight years old.

Chin told Sin Chew that they had continued to write to each other but their correspondence never touched on the birthday party.

The Cartoon Controversy…(2)

And now, an interesting twist.

Apparently the cartoons were published in an Egyptian tabloid 5 months before the current controversy, but they did not cause any uproar at all.

According to Freedom For Egyptians blog entry,

[The timing of the outrage is] a sign that this violent response to the cartoons is politically-motivated by Muslim extremists in Europe and the so-called secular governments of the Middle East. I want also to mention that despite the fact that all editors who tried to reprint the cartoons in the Middle East nowadays were arrested, the Egyptian editors went unharmed.

Someone commented that the said Egyptian tabloid is a “lower level” tabloid, i.e. would also publish articles with titles like “the moon is going to crash into the earth”, hence people didnt take it seriously.

Another commented that:

What happened was that some Muslims fell into zionists and neocons trap. Because of the repetititive broadcast worldwide by ABC, BBC, CNN, Jazeera , etc on the cartoon issues succeeded in inciting the ‘ignorant’ muslims. The Egyptian Newspapers failed to incite because they were locally distributed and printed only once.

Worldwide Media (ABC, BBC, CNN, Jazeera, FOX etc) is one of the best propaganda machine that zionists have in their hand. The Zionist did not highlight the Egyptian newspapers but chose to highlight the other ‘westerns’ (zionists own) newspapers… nice way to bring about the ‘clash of civilizations’

Half of the world’s human population is infected with the Toxoplasma parasite in the brain

adsense tips

tips picked up, use your own “risk”:

  • put a small picture next to your Adsense ads increases the visability of the ads and the CTR.
  • blend the ads with your navigation, same colour, no borders, same background colour as your site etc. Basically so it looks like it belongs to your site.
  • try and think where your users will be looking for info, most people wont click on things they think are ads, thats not to say you should disguise them just dont make em stand out like a sore thumb
  • the Google horizontal banners work well. You know, the ones where a user clicks and sees a group of ads and then you get paid if they make a *second* click (the first click to Google gets you nothing!). Even with this double-click issue it performs really well (I don’t think I can say how much better then a leaderboard without getting in trouble with the Google Adsense Terms of Service, but lets just say it’s significant). I think this is because the users who click on those ads are rabid—they want a ton of information and they probably visit more then one advertiser’s site.

The Cartoon Controversy

Being in Malaysia, it’s interesting to read people’s reaction on the matter above in yahoo.com, in possibly the world’s most active forum. More than 48,000 comments after only 90 minutes of posting!

Of course some of the comments are childish, but some are worthy of insight.

One of them led me to Robert Spencer’s article entitled “Cartoon Rage vs. Freedom of Speech.”

Robert who? Mr Spencer is

…a scholar of Islamic history, theology, and law and the director of Jihad Watch. He is the author of five books, seven monographs, and hundreds of articles about jihad and Islamic terrorism, including Islam Unveiled: Disturbing Questions About the World’s Fastest Growing Faith and The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades).
