The world’s best rejection letter

Herbert A. Millington
Chair - Search Committee
412A Clarkson Hall, Whitson University
College Hill, MA 34109

Dear Professor Millington,

Thank you for your letter of March 16. After careful consideration, I
regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me an assistant professor position in your department.

This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually
large number of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field of candidates, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals.

Despite Whitson's outstanding qualifications and previous experience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet my needs at this time. Therefore, I will assume the position of assistant professor in your department this August. I look forward to seeing you then.

Best of luck in rejecting future applicants.

Sincerely,
Chris L. Jensen

The world’s best Christmas lights

Apparently its located in Ontario, Canada and that the houseowner’s been doing it for years.

The only grouse is that the music with which the lights are being synched to is not at all Christmas-related.

The worst rendition of “O Holy Night” ever

Christmas is a time for singing carols. Some people can sing very well and some extremely bad. But in this case, one person has passed the point of badness into unknown territory.

The amazing thing is, the general concensus is that this is a serious attempt during an audition.

Enjoy, and hope this adds to the Christmas cheer.

Possibly the world’s worst Federal Highway

It will take something special to beat the official Federal Government Highway from Moscow to Yakutsk, in Siberia, Russia. Worse, it’s the only available road to get there, which could mean waiting for a week in 100 km-long traffic jams. Apparently, women even gave birth there while waiting.

This road has all the qualities that makes for a major humanitarian disaster during the rainy season, when the the road turns into an impassable mud blanket, swallowing everything, no matter how big it is. In the meantime the city has to partly airlift food products. (more…)

The world’s best selling music albums

One thing is for sure, Michael Jackson’s Thriller is still the one to beat. At 50 million albums sold worldwide, it has no peers.

It lags its nearest challengers by about 10 million records!

Surprisingly the 2nd and 3rd placings are to rock bands. AC/DC, at 2nd is a surprise because I don’t think their type of music is exactly “family friendly”. I mean, the very thought of Angus Young scampering about in your living room is cannot really be rated “U”. Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon is another surprise, but of a different kind. Their brand of progressive rock isn’t exactly easy listening.

Further down, albums that have sold more than 30 million copies are: (more…)

Possibly the world’s shortest poem

One fine day at my secondary school, during an “artistic session” (I name it so because my memory fails me: I can’t remember the exact purpose for that particular assembly), a guy named Syadan Ginu came up onstage with a matchbox. He was to recite a poem entitled “Mampu” (loosely translated, it means “capable”).

What he did onstage was quite memorable, as he recited possibly the shortest poem ever presented onstage in any school in Malaysia, ever. And possibly in any school in the world too.

His poem recital went as follows (English translation in italics, his actions in parentheses): (more…)

The world’s worst motto

For my school yearbook yonks ago, every leaving senior was asked to state their personal motto to be included in the book, alongside their picture.

Many people wrote the usual stuff, like “Usaha tangga kejayaan” and “insya allah.”

The top 10 films the US government would rather you not see

The Skeleton Project lists 10 films that they believe:

…if watched by the majority of US citizens there would be demands of impeachment, a push to pull out of Iraq and a complete shift in thought or at the very least some questioning of the government.

The writer also notes that only a few people have seen most of these these films, even the “popular” ones. (more…)

The world’s most boring hobby

What can be more boring than trainspotting? Taking photos of car parks is surely high up on the list.

But, I suppose it’s all business.

He has done something similar before, making calendars with pictures of roundabouts, and he had the last laugh, selling an amazing 60,000 copies.

The world’s worst music album covers

Guaranteed will never see light of day in Malaysia, let alone being imitated by our local artistes.

The absolute worst must be The Scorpions’ Virgin Killer (1976). Yes, the Scorpions were bad with a capital B in the 70s. The original cover was even censored on rateyourmusic.com. There’s an alternative cover at amazon.com. But you judge for yourself: (more…)

The people has decided on the greatest songs / singles of all time

According to rateyourmusic.com, the greatest single ever released is Joy Division’s Love will tear us apart (1980), rated 4.50 out of 5 by 100 voters. That means it’s rated higher than any single by any artist usually favoured by serious music afficionados like the Beatles, Bob Dylan and David Bowie. Personally, I don’t think it has the world’s strongest melodies or hooks, or the most interesting riff, or the most innovative arrangement. So perhaps it’s the lyrics? (more…)

Asian Games 2006: Badminton: Rexy Mainaky extremely disappointed with doubles players

The people has decided on the worst music albums of all time

Continuing on from my previous post, according to rateyourmusic.com, the worst music albums of all time are the following. And I totally agree with the list :-)

Crazy Frog - Crazy Frog presents crazy hits (2005) has been voted by 82 people as the worst album to have ever been released, at 0.66 out of 5. 75 people gave it the lowest possible mark, but 2 people gave it top marks, which should be expected in a survey of this nature. (more…)

The general public has decided on the greatest music albums of all time

I’ve been looking around, and for a while, thought of setting up my own, IMDB for music. This is where the masses decide which albums are the best (and of course the worst). I my opinion, this is a more reliable method of judging whether to go ahead and buy the album or not, rather than simply reading a review from a magazine whose author might have a completely different musical taste from you, he’s in a strange mood etc.

A few weeks ago I found what I was looking for in rateyourmusic.com. If earlier I relied on allmusic.com for reviews, this would supplement that. (more…)

Ace Insurance… insuring your progress, or else…

It seems someone got a brilliant idea to change a particular letter in a huge billboard by the roadside.

Possibly a bored commuter driving by the same spot every day, while being stuck in traffic, turned his or head to look, and after a while an evil grin appeared across that person’s face, and returned to the same spot later in the night to do his/her misdeed.

Definitely the folks at Ace Insurance won’t like it one bit, and I must say I’m a bit miffed too, because I think the company has very good child life insurance policies on offer.

The world’s best car to have sex in

According to the UK’s Daily Mail in October, the Volvo Estate is the world’s no.1 “passion wagon.”

This conclusion was reached after car insurer yesinsurance.co.uk asked 4,000 people.

And speaking of the survey, the poll revealed more interesting things about what people do with their cars, at least in the UK:

  • A staggering 68 % of folk have made love in a car.
  • An overwhelming 81 % of couples have got frisky in the car, but restrained themselves before going the whole distance.
  • Incredibly, 10% have actually engaged in sex WHILST DRIVING.
  • And 51 per cent have kissed, hugged or touched their partners enticingly whilst they were driving.
  • 6 % per cent admit to damaging their cars during close encounters, but only 1 % actually claim insurance - most probably out of embarrassment. Rear-view mirrors are the most easily damaged objects, followed by ripped fabric seating.
  • One in eight people had actually been caught whilst in the act in their vehicle!

So where do these people park their car to do their thing? A lay-by, but almost half the people interviewed said they’d do it anywhere. A quiet car park or country lane are also popular options for couples, as are multi-storey car parks and supermarket car parks.

…of course it’d be prudent to be discreet, so perhaps engaging in the wild thing under a car cover would be a good idea.

The other cars rounding up the top 10 are

  1. Mercedes Benz Sprinter Van
  2. VW Camper Van
  3. BMW 3 Series Saloon
  4. Ford Escort
  5. Audi TT
  6. Land Rover Discovery
  7. Porsche Carrera
  8. VW Golf
  9. Ford Focus 11.
