The world’s most famous choir

The world’s most famous boy’s choir, and probably any choir, and possibly the best choir in the world is the Vienna Boys’ Choir, known for its “exceeding high vocal standards.”

A private, not-for-profit organisation, it has around 100 boys between 10 and 14 years of age. They are then divided into 4 groups which tour the world, performing around 300 concerts yearly to almost half a million people.

As far as I could find out, their only visit to Malaysia was at Genting’s Arena of Stars in October 2004.

vienna-boys-choir.jpg

It’s entirely made up of sopranos and altos, and as suggested by the name, is based in Vienna, Austria. Many, but not all the boys are Austrian – some are from other countries too.

The choir has worked with some of the world’s greatest ever musicians, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Even some of the members of the choir went on to become world-class musicians, like Franz Schubert.

It had its origins during the Middle Ages, but it was only in 1924 that it was officially founded. Its original role was to give music accompaniment to a church service (mass).

Since then, it had turned into a pro music group. It has its own rehearsal venue and boarding school.

Here’s a video of them in action:

The world’s longest family feud

After almost 400 years, the Yoon and Shim families of South Korea have made peace.

The feud started in 1614 when the families began burying their ancestors in burial mounds next to each other. So what’s wrong with that: both claiming rights to the same piece of land!

The site is located in Paju, near the border with North Korea, about 40 km north of Seoul.

The following picture shows the graves of the most well-known members of each family: Shim Ji-won (top left) and General Yoon Gwan (bottom right). They are a mere few meters apart, yet separated by a high wall:

family-feud.jpg

In all those years, a few clashes and murders have happened. Even a king’s pleas for help were not entertained.

Formally the peace agreement will be inked March 2008, where the Yoon family gives around 8,000 square meters of land to the other family.

The weirdest duet in pop (and Christmas) history: David Bowie & Bing Crosby doing “Little Drummer Boy” (1977)

It is one of the most successful duets in Christmas music history, and definitely the most bizarre.

Then, Big Crosby, 73 is Mr White Christmas himself, the most straight-as-a-ruler, mainstream, 1940s whitebread crooning musician of his generation, while David Bowie, 30, the avant-garde “androgynous Ziggy Stardust” & glam rocker is the total opposite: the most offbeat musician of his generation.

The idea to pair the unlikeliest duet ever belongs to Bing Crosby’s Christmas TV Special producers, Gary Smith and Dwight Hemion.

But when the producers asked Bowie to sing “The Little Drummer Boy” on 11th September 1977, a few hours before shooting was sopposed to start, he refused, because he hated the song.

So what did they do? A team of songwriters worked frantically for 75 minutes to create an original melody and lyrics that could be sung together with “The Little Drummer Boy.” They called it “Peace on Earth.” Fortunately, Bowie liked it, and actually SANG it.

With less than an hour of rehearsals, Bowie and Crosby nailed it.

In the following years, from being a cult classic, it became a holiday staple.

It was first released as a single in 1982, and still sells today.

Poignantly, a month after the video shoot, Crosby died of a heart attack. The program was then first on CBS a month later.

Folks, Unconventional World Records wishes you A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The world’s slowest Christmas card to arrive after being posted

A Christmas card, poststamped 23rd December 1914 was posted for a Ms Ethel Martin of Oberlin, Kansas.

It was from her cousins in Alma, Nebraska.

After 93 years, it finally arrived at its destination, in perfect shape. Too bad Ms Martin was by then already passed on.

The card in postcard format shows a colour drawing of Santa Claus and a young girl.

The front: [pic source]

The back: [pic source]

As to where it spent the most of the 20th century is still a mystery. Indeed, it’s surprising that it never got thrown away and somehow someone found it and placed it inside another envelope with modern postage for the trip to Oberlin.

The original 1-cent postage stamp, the original cost of postage when it was first sent would not have been enough.

The card is now with Bernice Martin, Ethel’s sister-in-law. After it was featured in the media, she said she’d received calls from as far away as Japan and Iraq, even offers to purchase the card.

The first Asian to win either Miss World / Miss Universe is not from India

First, a little bit of comparison between Miss World and Miss Universe.

Miss World: the final is the world’s largest live annual TV event (2 billion in 200 countries), >100 delegates annually. The original, started 1951.

Miss Universe:
most popular in the US, approx 80 delegates. Started 1952.

Someone was overheard saying that the Miss Universe pageant is of higher standard because it’s open to the whole universe (i.e. 3 legged green aliens can take part), not just planet Earth.

Anyway, the first Asian to win either Miss World / Miss Universe is Akiko Kojima of Japan, who won Miss Universe in 1959. She was 23 years old.

The second is Apasra Hongsakula of Thailand who was the 1965 Miss Universe.

Third is Reita Faria of India who was the 1966 Miss World.

As we all know, almost half a century later Riyo Mori, 20 won it again for Japan.

It’s been a good few years for Japan. Kurara Chibana, 24 finished 2nd at Miss Universe 2006 and Miyako Miyazaki finished 5th at Miss Universe 2003.

The house with the most number of Christmas trees

He’s called Mr Christmas. Obviously Granville Gilbert, 70 is very fond of the Christmas season.

He has not one, but 23 Christmas trees inside his house, ranging from 2 feet to 7 feet tall! There’s at least one tree in every room and each tree has its own theme.

He explains why: “It’s the birthday of Christ and it’s a way of giving him a party. Plus, something in my blood just likes to decorate trees.” However, it’s not immediately clear whether he’s giving out birthday invitations to friends and relatives…

Most of the trees are not real, but this year (2007) he has a real one in the living room. Why only one? “The mess. I got tired of vacuuming up the needles out of the carpet,” he said.

There’s even one upside down Christmas tree.

Should he ever want to relocate, I guess he’d need quite a lot of moving boxes!

The most controversial woman in the history of rock music

Apparently there are 2 contenders:

Rolling Stone magazine once called Courtney Love “the most controversial woman in the history of rock.” She has been a delinquent, a stripper, an actor, a drug addict, a rock star, and since 1994, the widow of Kurt Cobain, the Nirvana frontman who committed suicide at the height of his fame.

Courtney Love, 43 [pic source]

courtney-love.jpg

When Cobain died, Love was hated by many of Cobain’s fans. In the years of its aftermath, she has been accused of things like: she drove Cobain to suicidal despair and hiring a hitman to kill him.

She received death threats, abuse and even shotgun shells thrown on stage during her concerts.

Then there’s Yoko Ono. To many, she was the reason for The Beatles’ breakup. In the 1960s, it was her abstract and bizarre artwork that attracted the attention of John Lennon. When Ono collaborated with Lennon in 1970 for the Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band project, she was even more avant-garde than Lennon himself.

Perhaps the world’s only modern case of spousal role reversal at the highest levels of a democratic government

Néstor Kirchner, 57, was the President of Argentina from 2003 until 10th December 2007. That means his wife, Cristina Fernandez, 54 was First Lady during that time.

However, in the October 2007 general election, she ran for President, and duly won with 45.29% of the vote, with a 22% lead over her nearest rival. She is Argentina’s first female president to be elected.

The Kirchners [pic source]

kirchners.jpg

When she was sworn in on 10th December 2007, she became the first wife in history to succeed her husband as a president (“job swapping”). That means her husband is now First Gentleman.

That would mean Kirchner, the 54th Argentine President, is the first ex-president who did not need to move out of the presidential residence even though he is no longer the president.

This feat has enabled the couple to create Argentina’s most powerful political dynasty since Juan and Eva “Evita” Peron. It has also drawn comparisons to former U.S. President Bill Clinton and his wife, presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Probably the worst thing that can happen at a kids’ Christmas party

Any kids’ Christmas party would not be complete without a Santa Claus handing out presents. So imagine what would happen if that Santa Claus died while doing his job.

It happened last year at Broughty Castle Bowling Club, Dundee, Scotland.

Andrew Robertson, 82, dressed as Santa Claus / Father Christmas was busy giving away presents to kids at a Christmas party when he felt hot, collapsed and had to be taken to another room in the same building, in full view of the children. At least 2 people tried to revive him, without success and when the medical team arrived, he was pronounced dead.

The late Mr Robertson [pic source]

Apparently, one of the kids asked: “How are we going to get our presents next week if Father Christmas is ill?”

The longest time in an institution without any visitors

ng-kow-yoong.jpg

Ng Kow Yoong, 60 was admitted to the children’s ward of Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta (a psychiatric institution), Perak BEFORE Malaya’s Independence, on 12th August 1957 as a 10-year old.

She is still there now, and all this time, for 50 years already, she never had any visitors. In fact, not even a soul has so much as called to ask about her health.

The children’s ward closed long ago.

It is unclear why Ng was admitted, but there are 2 possible reasons: aggressive behaviour or being mentally challenged.

The hospital wants to get in touch with Ng’s family to discuss her health status. If anybody has any information about her family, please contact Norhapisah Ismail, the hospital’s medical social work unit officer at 05-5332333 (extension 5973) or the hospital’s female ward 4A at extension 5533.

The world’s first rock and roll music record

The late Ike Turner (1931-2007) was responsible for arguably the world’s first rock and roll record. On 5th March 1951, his band recorded “Rocket 88″, a rhythm and blues number. It was listed on the charts as Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats, but it was actually Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm. Ike wrote and sang lead vocals and played the saxophone. This was one of the very first songs which utilised guitar distortion/fuzz (played by Willie Kizart), although it was unintentional: one of the amps used was damaged before recording commenced.

According to wikipedia:

The song is seen as a prototype rock and roll song in musical style and lineup, not to mention its lyrical theme, in which an automobile serves as a metaphor for romantic prowess.

It was recorded at pioneer rock and roll record producer Sam Phillips’ studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Legend has it that Phillips liked the then-strange sound of the guitar and used it.

rocket88.jpg

The song was a no.1 hit, the 2nd biggest rhythm and blues single of 1951. In contrast, Elvis Presley did not release his first single until 3 years later.

Christmas carols: the best… and worst version of “O Holy Night” ever

“O Holy Night” is a standard modern Christmas carol, usually sung solo. There have been countless covers of this world-famous number written by Adolphe Adam 150 years ago.

Most of them range from so-so to OK. Some are absolutely fantastic and some are horrendously bad. I have selected two of the very best and two (or three) of the very worst. I have blogged about one of the worst ones last year.

IMHO, the greatest ever performance is by Michael Bolton, followed by Mariah Carey.

Michael Bolton’s 1996 version

Mariah Carey’s 1994 version

Somebody mixed their individual studio performances of the song into a “duet”:

Howard Hughes: the strangest last 20 years of someone who was the world’s wealthiest person

Howard Hughes (1905-1976) was certainly one of the most colourful characters who ever lived, dubbed The World’s Ultimate Enigma by Time. He was an industrialist, entrepreneur, world record setter and pioneer in aviation, similar to Steve Fossett, and one of the world’s most powerful men.

Hughest in 1938, aged 33

He was one of the wealthiest persons who ever lived, being worth more than USD40 billion (in 2006 dollars) at one time. In fact, in 1966, he was *the* world’s richest person.

He was also once nicknamed The World’s Greatest Womanizer, well known for his flamboyance. He dated various beautiful Hollywood actresses, including Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn, and Olivia de Havilland. He was married and divorced twice, to Ella Rice and Jean Peters, a famous actress.

Hughes in 1955, aged 50

Once, he moved to, and stayed at a Las Vegas casino / hotel. When the owner complained about his behaviour, Hughes simply bought not just the hotel, but 4 other casinos in the area.

But then things became bizarre. Hughes slowly became an eccentric, a hypochondriac, obsessed with avoiding germs. He became addicted to codeine and Valium, and displayed extreme compulsive-obsessive behaviour.

In the last 20 years of his life, Hughes was never seen or photographed in public.

Nobody could reach him, not even the President! Only his security guards and doctors were allowed to see him.

Vivid details of the last days of his life as described in crimelibrary.com:

- Injecting codeine into his arms, he would break the needles. These would later show up on on the autopsy X-rays.
- On his feet, he wore tissue boxes.
- He was naked all the time
- He never cut his hair, beard or nails.
- He ate candy bars but never brushed his teeth, resulting in his teeth all rotting and falling off.
- He urinated on the floor and never bathed, but he might sit on the toilet for 20 hours in one stretch.
- He watched movies obsessively.
- he drafted complex notes to his employees on the proper way to handle his belongings, for example:

(i) Before handing a spoon to Hughes:
- wrap its handle in tissue paper and seal it with cellophane tape.
- wrap a second piece of tissue over the first protective wrapping.
On receiving the spoon, Hughes would use it with the handle still covered.

(ii) In order to remove his hearing-aid cord from the bathroom cabinet:
- use 6 to 8 tissues to turn the knob on the bathroom door
- use 6 to 8 new tissues to open the bathroom cabinet and remove an unused bar of soap
- clean your hands with the soap
- use at least 15 tissues to open the door to the cabinet containing the hearing aid
- remove the sealed envelope containing the hearing aid with two hands using another 15 tissues in both hands

Time Magazine’s (1976) depiction of Hughes in his last days

He died mysteriously on 5th April 1976 on the way to a hospital. Cause of death was apparently heart failure.

Nobody could recognise him, his 6’4″ frame weighed only 41kg, so they had to take his fingerprints, where the FBI confirmed that the corpse was indeed that of Hughes .

Want to read more? I recommend James Phelan’s book “Howard Hughes: The Hidden Years”.

Then, 20 years after his death, his empire ended, when his heirs announced in February 1996 that they had agreed to sell the last remnants of the Hughes holdings, vast tracts of land and buildings in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The rest of his assets, including aircraft, satellite construction, casinos and oil equipment, were already sold earlier.

The world’s last person to be guillotined

This dubious honour belongs to Hamida Djandoubi (1949 – 10 September 1977), a Tunisian immigrant.

A guillotine, also dubbed “Madame Guillotine” or “France’s National Razor”

guillotine.jpg

He was convicted of torturing and killing his ex-girlfriend, Elisabeth Bousquet, 21.

An apparent picture of Djandoubi

djandoubi.jpg

4 years earlier, in 1973, Bousquet had filed a complaint against him for illegal confinement and cruelty. Djandoubi was arrested but then released. In the July 1974, he took revenge: kidnapped her, took her home, beat her, stubbed a lit cigarette all over her breasts and genital area, and finally took her by car to an outskirt of Marseille and strangled her to death, then put the body in a shed.

A few days later the body was discovered. One month later it was identified and Djandoubi arrested again.

His trial started 24th February 1977. A day later he was given the death sentence. An appeal was rejected, and at 4.40 am on 10th September 1977, he was guillotined.

France abolished the death penalty in 1981.

Probably the world’s only national library with an X-rated section

Yahoo! News reported on 5th December 2007 that there’s an X-rated exhibit on libido opening this week at the Francois Mitterrand National Library in Paris.

french-national-library.jpg

The exhibit runs until 2nd March 2008, and understandably, it’s only open to those 16 years and older.

Called “L’Enfer de la Bibliotheque, Eros au secret” (Hell at the Library, Eros in Secret) it has 350 pieces of material, including:

french-national-library-1.jpg
- libertine literature
- pornography, including an 1830s pop-up, where lifting a paper door reveals a man showing his private parts to a blushing young woman. The caption reads: “This, Mademoiselle, is how you can sum up the history of France.”
- Japanese prints
- photographs
- audio recordings of persons reading once-censored poems.
- dozens of banned books, including a manuscript by the Marquis de Sade
- political pamphlets, including:
(i) an anti-royal one which shows Marie Antoinette, the 18th century queen of France, lifting her skirt in “undignified poses.”
(ii) an anti-clerical 1790 one containing a list of priests caught dallying with prostitutes, complete with the ladies’ names and addresses, plus sordid details of what kind of things the priests liked to do with them.

Actually the section has been in existence for about 170 years but was kept secret and locked away. Librarians would hide documents from the library’s collection that they thought “dangerous for public morality.” Apparently it was not simply destroyed because the collection is “sometimes very precious for book-lovers and have a great monetary value,” as the then library director, Joseph Naudet described it in 1849.

It was dubbed L’Enfer (Hell) and has its own classification category.

The world’s most controversial way of raising funds for charity

The Telegraph UK reported on 30th November 2007 that hooker Maria Carolina of Chile has auctioned 27 hours of sex to raise funds for a disabled children’s charity. Prostitution is legal in that country.

maria-carolina.jpg

Perhaps it’s not surprising that she’s has become an instant celebrity after making headlines and appearing on talk shows since she announced her intentions.

Why 27 hours? Because the fundraising event, the biggest in the country, ran for 27 hours in the first weekend of December.

She said she was “touched by the cause of disabled children” and that “I am going to contribute with my work to a purpose that touches me deeply.”

maria-carolina-2.jpg

She charges USD300 for a 90-minute session and estimated that she would raise more than USD4000.

What’s more, she said she’s already sold out the 27 hours, and that one of her clients already paid.

However, the fundraising event organiser, Mario Kreutzberger was not too sure about the whole thing: “everyone can do what they want, but if someone tells me that they’ll do something immoral … I’m not going to encourage it.”

The world’s holiest thumb drive / USB stick

Luis Eslava designed the Maria USB stick / thumb drive with a rallying marketing cry of “is there anyone who hasn’t sometimes wished for holy backup to protect their most precious data? It’s finally available in the form of the Maria USB!”

Capable of holding 512MB, it sells for a quite costly 69 euros.

Perhaps this is the first time religion and data backup are so visibly intertwined.

Her LED “heart” even “beats” all the time, slowly when in passively connected, and quicker while data transfer is in progress. Even her halo has a prayer engraved: “Oh Maria, keep my data safe!”
