Joseph Fritzl has a challenger for the title of the world’s worst ever father.

Their personalities were similar: both were physically imposing and aggresive in behaviour, and would not hesitate to hand out a hiding of their demands were not met.

It was reported that when the first daughter had her first pregnancy at age of 14, the father “rained blows on her stomach in an attempt to force her to miscarry.”

Mr X’s diabolical influence was such that the daughters were out in the open, not confined to a dungeon, yet they could not bring themselves to report their predicament even when meeting other people. For example:
(i) In 1993 doctors warned one of the daughters that she must not have any more children by the same man because of “the number with medical conditions.” She could’ve told the doctors right there and then, but she apparently didn’t;
(ii) In 1997, police started an investigation when a relative alleged that sex abuse were in the family, but the daughters refused to cooperate.

Sheffield Crown Court was told that he experienced “pleasure in harming his own daughters.” In addition, his sister-in-law was reported to have said that he reaped a lot of money in child benefit payments to “lavish on himself.”

Nicholas Campbell QC was reported to have said:

All the family were frightened of him. When they heard his car pulling up outside the house, the children and their mother ran to their respective rooms. His younger daughter told of the frightening habit her father had of putting her head next to the flames of their gas fire and that when she struggled to get away on certain occasions she burnt her eyes.

All the time, when the sisters were challenged about the paternity of their children, they would cover it up. They started taking the pill. He said they should not be taking it and, just as they felt unable to avoid his sexual abuse, they obeyed.

Apparently, the duo tried to offer him GBP100 (about USD230) every month from their child benefits to stop the abuse. They also tried to give him as much whisky to drink as they could, hoping he would drink himself to death.

He has been handed consecutive life terms in jail.
