The biggest rat which ever walked the earth

Can you imagine a rat weighing 1 tonne, and what your cat would do?

Truly the King Kong of the rodents, luckily it died between 2 and 4 million years ago, long before humans appeared on Earth. It used to roam the swamps in South America.

The skull is 20 inches long, suggesting that its body is 10 feet long!

Compare the size of its skull with a modern rat

The skull was found recently on a beach in Uruguay, and it’s confirmed to be a new species, dubbed Josephoartigasia Monesi, a member of the order Rodentia.

The biggest modern rat, the already-huge 60 kilogram capybara, seems very small in comparison.

Before this, the biggest rat ever found was the Phoberomys pattersoni which was found in Venezuela in 2003, weighing an estimated 700 kilograms.

An artist’s impression of the monster’s face would’ve looked like (looks more like a hippopotamus than a rat, doesn’t it)?

Now here’s a good news: it was not carnivorous, since its grinding teeth are miniscule. That means it only ate, albeit in large amounts, soft vegetation, fruit and plants in the deltas.

Howard Hughes: the strangest last 20 years of someone who was the world’s wealthiest person

Howard Hughes (1905-1976) was certainly one of the most colourful characters who ever lived, dubbed The World’s Ultimate Enigma by Time. He was an industrialist, entrepreneur, world record setter and pioneer in aviation, similar to Steve Fossett, and one of the world’s most powerful men.

Hughest in 1938, aged 33

He was one of the wealthiest persons who ever lived, being worth more than USD40 billion (in 2006 dollars) at one time. In fact, in 1966, he was *the* world’s richest person.

He was also once nicknamed The World’s Greatest Womanizer, well known for his flamboyance. He dated various beautiful Hollywood actresses, including Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn, and Olivia de Havilland. He was married and divorced twice, to Ella Rice and Jean Peters, a famous actress.

Hughes in 1955, aged 50

Once, he moved to, and stayed at a Las Vegas casino / hotel. When the owner complained about his behaviour, Hughes simply bought not just the hotel, but 4 other casinos in the area.

But then things became bizarre. Hughes slowly became an eccentric, a hypochondriac, obsessed with avoiding germs. He became addicted to codeine and Valium, and displayed extreme compulsive-obsessive behaviour.

In the last 20 years of his life, Hughes was never seen or photographed in public.

Nobody could reach him, not even the President! Only his security guards and doctors were allowed to see him.

Vivid details of the last days of his life as described in crimelibrary.com:

- Injecting codeine into his arms, he would break the needles. These would later show up on on the autopsy X-rays.
- On his feet, he wore tissue boxes.
- He was naked all the time
- He never cut his hair, beard or nails.
- He ate candy bars but never brushed his teeth, resulting in his teeth all rotting and falling off.
- He urinated on the floor and never bathed, but he might sit on the toilet for 20 hours in one stretch.
- He watched movies obsessively.
- he drafted complex notes to his employees on the proper way to handle his belongings, for example:

(i) Before handing a spoon to Hughes:
- wrap its handle in tissue paper and seal it with cellophane tape.
- wrap a second piece of tissue over the first protective wrapping.
On receiving the spoon, Hughes would use it with the handle still covered.

(ii) In order to remove his hearing-aid cord from the bathroom cabinet:
- use 6 to 8 tissues to turn the knob on the bathroom door
- use 6 to 8 new tissues to open the bathroom cabinet and remove an unused bar of soap
- clean your hands with the soap
- use at least 15 tissues to open the door to the cabinet containing the hearing aid
- remove the sealed envelope containing the hearing aid with two hands using another 15 tissues in both hands

Time Magazine’s (1976) depiction of Hughes in his last days

He died mysteriously on 5th April 1976 on the way to a hospital. Cause of death was apparently heart failure.

Nobody could recognise him, his 6’4″ frame weighed only 41kg, so they had to take his fingerprints, where the FBI confirmed that the corpse was indeed that of Hughes .

Want to read more? I recommend James Phelan’s book “Howard Hughes: The Hidden Years”.

Then, 20 years after his death, his empire ended, when his heirs announced in February 1996 that they had agreed to sell the last remnants of the Hughes holdings, vast tracts of land and buildings in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The rest of his assets, including aircraft, satellite construction, casinos and oil equipment, were already sold earlier.

The world’s most authentic bigfoot video footage ever

There have been many purported evidence of the existence of the creature known as bigfoot / sasquatch / yeti over the years. The most recent newsmaker is perhaps the images taken by Rick Jacobs on 16th September 2007, of which one of them looks like this:

bigfoot-rick-jacobs.jpeg

Some people said it *could* be a bigfoot, but others derided it as merely “a bear with a bad skin infection.”

In the not too distant past, bigfoots have also made the news in Johor; unfortunately there’s no really compelling images to show for it.

However, the most compelling evidence that bigfoots really do exist is the Patterson-Gimlin film, which was taken on 20th October 1967. Even though some have declared it a hoax, I think the arguments supporting for it are indeed very compelling and interesting. With recent advances in image enhancing technology, more details have emerged from the film which makes the case supporting the existence of bigfoots stronger. I am not saying that the debate has been won, but it is definitely not lost yet.

The following is the original video:

Probably the world’s strangest cause of death

On 28th September 2007 Yahoo News reported that in Phoenix, USA killer amoebas living in lakes entered the body of Aaron Evans, 14 through the nose, attacked the brain, eating it until the boy died.

naegleria-3.jpg

At first Aaron complained of headache that wouldn’t go away. Doctors first suspected meningitis. Only later did doctors determine that the boy had been infected with Naegleria.

It sounds like science fiction but it’s shockingly true.

Mercifully, real-life encounters with it are very rare.

Still, it has killed 6 boys and young men this year alone: 3 in Florida, 2 in Texas and 1 in Arizona.

The amoeba is called Naegleria fowleri, and has killed 23 people in the US alone between 1995 and 2004.

Apparently it was discovered in Australia in the 60s, and there have been several hundred cases worldwide since then.

Naegleria lives almost everywhere: lakes, hot springs, even dirty swimming pools, eating off algae and bacteria in the sediment.

People get infected when they wade through shallow water and stir up the bottom. If water somehow shot up the nose, the amoeba can gain a foothold.

It then destroys tissue as it makes its way up into the brain. There, it basically eats the brain.

Symptoms include a stiff neck, headaches and fevers. Later stages, there’ll be signs of brain damage such as hallucinations and behavioral changes.

Once infected, most people have little chance of survival. Some drugs have stopped the amoeba in lab experiments, but people who have been attacked rarely survive.

From initial exposure, you’d die within 2 weeks.

You should avoid warm, standing water and areas with algae blooms. The easiest way to prevent infection is to use nose clips when swimming or diving in fresh water i.e. do not allow water to go way up in your nose.

The world’s ugliest fish

The title of the world’s ugliest fish is a toss between 2 contenders.

First up is Lasiognathus Saccostoma, which has been called “a grotesque among grotesques” and “has an overbite to end all overbites.” It’s surprisingly small, only 3 inches long. Nature has equipped it with a fishing rod, complete with lure and three bony hooks! Its precise function is as yet unknown, but undersea explorer William Beebe was reported to have said way back in 1930 that “it might be cast swiftly ahead, when the hooks and lights would so frighten any pursued fish that they would hesitate long enough to be engulfed in the onrushing maw.”

The other contender is Himantolophus Groenlandicus or footballfish, which has been described as having a face “only a mother could love.” It is apparently the first deep-sea angler ever found – that was back in 1833 at 22 inches long – still the largest on record. As with the other fish, this one also has some kind of “fishing rod” contraption built-in.

The world’s strangest animals

I think there’s no contest here: they are all deep sea animals. But as to which one is the strangest / most bizarre, you’d have several choices.

Up first is the deep sea giant sea spider, which lives more than a mile deep in the Pacific. It is nearly a foot across.

Then there is the deep sea glass squid, which lives off New Zealand.

Next up, the one and only viperfish. It has lower fangs so long that “they don’t even fit in its mouth, but rather project back dangerously close to the eyes.”

Next up, the “Saccopharynx lavenbergi” (The gulper).

Apparently these “can reach six feet in length, have rows of sharp little teeth, and, like pythons of the deep, can swallow prey much fatter than themselves. They down victims whole, of course, which is why they’re called gulpers.”

The world’s most unusual persons’ names

Back in January 2007 I mentioned that Sabahans are the world’s most inventive name-makers. I am dead wrong.

For celebrities, the strangest must be Akon, the American R&B singer, rapper, songwriter, and record producer, whose real name is Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Locku Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam.

I think the most number of middle names is 24, Anna Bertha Cecilia Diana Emily Fanny Gertrude Hypatia Inez Jane Kate Louise Maud Nora Ophelia Prudence Quince Rebecca Sarah Teresa Ulysis Venus Winifred Xenophon Yetty Zeno Pepper. Did you realise that her names follow the alphabet order? She was a British woman who lived in the earlier part of the 20th century. Her nickname is none other than “Alphabet.”

Then there is Zachary Zzzzzzzzzra (born Bill Holland) who legally changed his name as a marketing ploy so that “people could find him in the back of the phone book”.

Then there’s Praise-God Barebone of England, who was said to have the full name of Unless-Jesus-Christ-Had-Died-For-Thee-Thou-Hadst-Been-Damned Barebone (1598 – 1679).

Wolfe+585, Senior (born 1904), of the USA, whose full name is, wait for it: Adolph Blaine Charles David Earl Frederick Gerald Hubert Irvin John Kenneth Lloyd Martin Nero Oliver Paul Quincy Randolph Sherman Thomas Uncas Victor William Xerxes Yancy Zeus Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorffvoralternwarengewissenhaftschaferswessenschafewarenwohlgepflegeunds

Good grief, imagine having to say that over the phone. Definitely the longest personal name ever.

There are many other really strange people’s names, but IMHO, the strangest must be the case where the parents of a Swedish boy born in 1991 wanted to name him the utterly unpronouncable, 43-character “Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116″. It’s supposed to be pronounced as “Albin” but I fail to see the connection, can you?)

Poor boy – can you imagine how much he will dread the question “how do you pronounce your name?” at primary school later?

As a matter of fact, his ultra-progressive parents went beyond that – they had planned never to legally name him at all, in protest to the naming law of Sweden which reads:

“First names shall not be approved if they can cause offense or can be supposed to cause discomfort for the one using it, or names which for some obvious reason are not suitable as a first name.”

They managed to do so until the boy was 5, but then they were fined by a district court for the offence.

In response, they submitted the strange name, justifying it as “a pregnant, expressionistic development that we see as an artistic creation.” The parents suggested the name be understood via pataphysics, which is a philosophy dedicated to studying what lies beyond the realm of metaphysics (philosophy concerned with explaining the ultimate nature of reality, being, and the world). Oo-kay… Not surprisingly, the court rejected the name.

Undeterred, the parents went for a simpler name, the rather too simple, “A”, also pronounced “Albin”. Alas, again they were thwarted by the court because one letter names are not allowed either.

Malaysia’s dirtiest house

The Star reported on 21st April 2007 that a 73-year old man living alone at a double storey link house in Taman Cempaka, Ipoh developed a strange hobby in 2003 – collecting old and presumably modern furniture, clothes, broken flower and cooking pots, plastic ware, bicycles, newspapers, rotten fruit, rusting refrigerators and other junk and storing them in and around his house.

4 years later, 40 Ipoh City Council workers came to his house with a 3-ton lorry. In one hour, they filled it with rubbish from the driveway and garden. 3-ton lorry filled to the brim, and they have not even entered the house yet!

The house itself was locked, but piles of smelly, rotting garbage can be seen.

The man had been staying in the house for the past 10 years, and apparently his wife and son moved out 3 years back.

On another note, where golf galaxy is the single best place to look for golf equipment, it is also undoubtedly the best place to buy basketball as well as baseball equipment. All the baseball buffs can relax now.

The world’s strangest rape cases (part II)

As followup to my previous post on the same subject.

The Star reported on 20th April 2007 that Ta Sam, 67, is a highly sexed Cambodian in Svay Rieng province whose previous 2 wives divorced him due to his insatiable appetite in bed.

10 days after his latest divorce, he could contain himself no longer. In middle of the night, he picked out one of his young cows in the shed near his house. Stripping down to his birthday suit, he mounted her, only to receive fatal kicks from the heifer to his head and genital area. His grandson heard the commotion, checked it out and discovered his grandad naked and dead on the shed floor.

Ta Sam has now earned the dubious title of the world’s only cow rapist who died when his intended victim fought back.

Police decided not take any action against the bovine because after all, it acted in self defence.

The world’s craziest group activities done in public

New York City has its annual No Pants Subway Ride, where hundreds of people would board a particular subway train fully clothed above the waist, but under the waist, only in their briefs or panties. What they’re doing is not breaking any laws, hence they’ve been at it since 2002, started by 7 members of the comedy group Improv Everywhere.

This year, they again used the #6 train, on 13th January. Starting in the afternoon, one person would board the train in boxers and briefs. Then another, and another. By the end of the ride, there’d be 20 to 40 similarly underdressed people on the same train. So, at the beginning fellow passengers could dismiss the lone underdressed guy as deranged, but when there’s many of them, it becomes something that’s obviously meant to be funny.

Some pics

Another are flash mobs, where a group of people would assemble suddenly in a public place, do something unusual for a short period, then quickly disperse. This is possible due to modern communications networks like mobile phones and the internet. Flash mobs are not restricted to the western world, the Far East don’t want to be undone either.

Check out this Japanese flash mob, taken from a comedy show, where 100 people chase after random strangers, with extremely funny reactions. Apparently, what the mob is shouting is:

Probably the world’s best optical illusions

IMHO, the world’s best natural optical illusion is this picture of 2 planes which seem to be colliding in mid-air, but are in fact a safe distance from each other.

Apparently, it’s a Lufthansa 747-400 and a United Airlines 757-200 that were on simultaneous approaches to 2 separate runways at San Francisco Airport. The separation requirement for flying in parallel and doing simultaneous approaches is more than 200 meters. Therefore, these 2 planes are actually more than 200m apart!

How did the picture turn out to be like that? Timing and position of the photographer is one thing. Another, and possibly most important is: The fact that the Lufthansa plane is 3 times larger than the other plane and it being positioned slightly behind, gives us this amazing optical illusion.

Impressed? Check out this other optical illusion. The squares marked A and B are the same shade of gray, yet they appear different. I bet everybody, even after several glances, would be stumped by this one.

The world’s strangest rape cases

The world’s oldest rape victim

It could be the 98-year-old woman at an Australian nursing home. As reported by ABC TV in February 2006, the woman suffering from dementia was raped three times in a nursing home in Victoria State by a staff members. In addition, he also allegedly abused other residents. [1]

The world’s oldest person on whom rape was attempted

In June 2006, the BBC reported that Paul Blackwood broke into a 101-year-old woman’s house in West Midlands, United Kingdom, in November 2005 and attempted to rape her.

The world’s strangest rape case (I)

In February 2007, The Oregonian reported that Georgie Audean Buoy, an 82-year-old woman, and described as a “kind old church volunteer who enjoys gardening”, has been sentenced to 3 years jail for having a sexual relationship with an 11-year-old boy in The Dalles, Oregon, USA. Even residents of the town where it happened are still having a hard time believing it. She was apparently a foster mother to the boy and was arrested a year ago in the town with a population of 12,000. The DA felt compelled to offer a copy of her taped confession to quell the protests of the many doubters. Buoy has been a member of the local church for more than 20 years, greeted parishioners on Sundays and welcomed those in need to stay at her house. The pastor summed it up: “This is one of those things that’s unexplainable to us”. [3]

But I think this case below takes the cake:

The world’s strangest rape case (II)

Apparently, in November 2004, sobkor.ru reported that a cat named Timka raped a woman in Russia – she was hospitalised with “severe injuries to her genitals”. How did it happen? Well, 2 women, Vera and Svetlana wanted to er… “experience sexual pleasure via intimate contact with a cat.” Yep, zoophilia, bestiality, whatever you call it was on the cards. Can’t really blame the cat, can you?

The world’s strangest hobby

Chuck Lamb, 47 aka The Dead Body Guy probably has the world’s strangest hobby: he likes to play dead. As if that’s not enough, he takes it one step further: take photos and videos of himself playing dead and posts them on his website, starting in 2005.

These bizarre antics have attracted 32 million hits to his website by its 1st anniversary, and several newsprint, TV and radio appearances. But what is his motivation? In his website, he says that he’d always dreamed of being in a movie or on TV: "I grew up like most people in their 40′s watching everything from Dragnet to Twilight Zone and dreaming ‘I can do that if just given the chance’. I still watch every bit of the credits of a show or movie to see all of the people it takes to make it. Key grips, best boys and personal assistants are all included. I close my eyes and see dead body… played by… me!"

Well, that seems to be a pretty bizarre hobby for a married man with 6 kids. He himself admitted that he has no acting experience and not good looking. In other words, he’d never make it as an actor. But there’s one thing he can do as well as anyone: lay around with the best of them!

He continues: "Just ask my wife. No one can lay around like me. Every CSI, Law & Order, and countless other movies and shows feature a dead body in it. I say ‘THAT COULD BE ME!’ I can lay there and be dead. I can achieve my dream by being shot, stabbed, drugged, mugged, mangled, strangled or any other scenario you can think of. I can even recite lines if needed. As you have probably already guessed, I am not shy at all. I am asking people all over the world ‘Help Me Live My Dream — Let Me Play Dead.’"

The world’s greatest genius is not who you’d expect

Update 18th Feb 2007: There’s another contender for this title. According to the AP, James Pacenza, 58 an employee with IBM was fired for visiting an adult chat room at work. However, amazingly he is suing his boss for USD5 million because “he is an Internet addict who deserves treatment and sympathy rather than dismissal.” Further: “…he visits chat rooms to treat traumatic stress incurred in 1969 when he saw his best friend killed during an Army patrol in Vietnam. The stress caused him to become a sex addict, and with the development of the Internet, an Internet addict.” He claimed protection under the American with Disabilities Act.

Now, can we all use this kind of excuse in this country?
————————————————

Rather than people like Einstein, Galileo or Newton, the title of the world’s greatest genius should belong to Stephen Tame, 29 of Suffolk, United Kingdom.

Who?

Reuters on 19th December 2006 reported that this guy who is a devout Christian was awarded more than 3 million pounds in damages at London’s High Court.

For what?

He successfully argued in court that an accident at work boosted his libido and wrecked his marriage as he turned to prostitutes and pornography. Apparently, he suffered severe head injuries in a fall, transforming him from a loyal newlywed (he had been married 8 months before his accident) into a raving womaniser who had two affairs.

He was in a coma for two months after falling from a gantry while working at a bicycle warehouse shortly after his marriage in January 2002. Doctors said it was a miracle he survived.

His former employer, Professional Cycle Marketing, of Essex, failed to argue through their lawyers that his injuries were not as bad as suggested in court.

Lisa Sparxxx is the world’s greatest slut

No relation to Bubba Sparxxx I suppose.

Probably no woman has ever had more sex, with more men, in 24 hours than she did: 919 men to be exact. That means one man every 2 minutes, non stop, for one WHOLE DAY!!

A renowned American porn star, Ms Sparxxx achieved this feat on 16th October 2004, when she was 28, during Eroticon 2004. Eroticon is an annual porn festival in Warsaw, Poland. It became the world’s premier gangbanging event when Gangbang in the US fizzled out. Eroticon started in 2001 and is now in its 6th year.

The event in which she participated in and broke the record is officially known as the Third Annual World Gangbang Championship, which is one of the main events at Eroticon.

Did I say Warsaw? Yes, THE Warsaw, and THE Poland. Made you think about the previous Pope doesnt it.

She achieved the record in a gangbang competition, which is held live as a 3-woman competition. Objective of competition is to see which women can have sex with the most number of men in 24 hours. Her challengers were the previous record holder, Polish porn star Marianna Rokita and a Brazilian named Patricia.

The previous record by Ms Rokita was set in 2003, when she had sex with “only” 759 men in a day.

Ms Sparxxx’s real name is unknown, although I think it’s safe to say that her parents and extended family would prefer that be kept secret.

She’s married. I don’t know what kind of person he is, but for sure he’s not your regular type of guy. Here in Malaysia, a guy would kill someone who he sees taking his wife out to dinner out of jealousy. And what if that same guy finds out that his wife had 900 men in a day? I shudder to think of the consequences.

Some trivia about the contest:

  • All the guys needed to pass an STD screening.
  • Championship started at 9 am, finished at almost 9pm. That means it’s not really 24 hours, but a mere 12 hours. Incredible.
  • The rules say that each sexual contact has to take more then 30 and the most 60 seconds.
  • Ms Sparxxx lead right from the start but Patricia stayed very close. Difference between them never amounted to more than 5 sexual encounters. The old record was broken at 6:16 pm, when the jury recognized the 760th man, who had sex contact with Lisa. Two minutes later Patricia broke the old record too with her 760th partner.
  • The contest finally ended at 8:47 pm, with the final score at 919 for Lisa and Patricia at 898. I cannot imagine what it must have felt like down there for them at that point. It must be so bad that even the thought of breaking the magical 1,000 mark was abandoned.
  • Each sexual contact was carefully watched, rated and counted by referees.
  • 6 cameras were used to record the event..

The world’s most bizarre gaming plotline

According to bit-tech.net, Katamari Damacy is king of the crazy games:

At first glance, it seems quite normal, revolving around a King and a Prince, who are trying to put the universe back together after accidentally destroying it.

The fact that the son builds stars by rolling a big ball of junk around around does not, apparently, detract from the plotline or even make the idea of a story here unfeasible. Rolling around the world rolling up everyday objects in to a large ball of katamari results in a pile of junk large enough to make a star. The developers even decided to expand the story in the PSP game Me and My Katamari. The King and the Prince decide to go on holiday to a tropical island to take a break from all their star constructing.

However, as can be expected when dealing with the King of All Cosmos, everything goes wrong (how did this guy actually become King?) and his son has to go about rectifying things by building custom planets for the islands inhabitants, such as a tortoise and an ant. Arguments ensue, but eventually the 5cm wonder child is sent off the Sunflower Continent as that’s the best place to build planets from… Apparently. That’s without counting We Love Katamari, which has a self-referential plotline dealing with how the King reponds to his new-found fame on Earth.

The music adds to the sense of insanity, as a strange Japanese chap recites “Da dum, dee dee da da dum, dar dar, dee Katmari Damacy…” repeatedly.

Possibly the world’s stupidest man

As reported by Australia’s news.com back in August 2006, Michael John Neal, 48 has condom phobia and has a “what the hell” attitute towards his sexual partners. He’s already HIV positive and has allegedly infected at least 5 men. Shockingly, he told a court that he had wanted to contract the deadly virus. (more…)

Geopathic stress: pseudoscience?

Looks like the study/practice of geopathic stress is classified as pseudoscience, but some mainstream doctors in Europe do believe in it. What’s most interesting to me is the fact that in 1985, Dr. Veronika Carstens, wife of former German Federal President Karl Castens, published a study stating that there were 700 cases documented worldwide where terminal cancer patients had regained their health without any conventional treatment after their sleeping area had been moved from a geopathic stress zone to one in which there was no detectable geopathic stress.

The most number of t-shirts worn at one time

You will never guess. Ten, twenty maybe, but no, the answer is: one hundred and fifty five! Watch in wonder at how his head seems to shrink and retreat into his body.

Someone commented: they have t-shirts THAT big? Yes apparently 10XL size is available.

And I thought XXXL is big already!

Anyway, XXXXXXXXXXL sizes would surely make funny shirts.

The world’s most controversial restaurant

As reported by Reuters in August 2006

A new restaurant in India’s financial hub, Mumbai is named after Adolf Hitler and promoted with posters showing the German leader and Nazi swastikas.

The owner, Punit Shablok said he chose the name “Hitler’s cross” because:

“We wanted to be different. This is one name that will stay in people’s minds. We are not promoting Hitler. But we want to tell people we are different in the way he was different.”

In fact, the owners are planning to turn the eatery’s name into a brand with more branches in Mumbai.

Unsurprisingly it’s not a favourite with the local Jewish community. India’s remaining Jews (most migrated to Israel and the West over the years) say they are outraged by the gimmick.

Jonathan Solomon, the chairman of the Indian Jewish Federation, the community’s umbrella organization said:

“This signifies a severe lack of awareness of the agony of millions of Jews caused by one man. We are going to stop this deification of Hitler.”

But how exactly they’re planning to stop it, he did not elaborate.

———————————————————-

The small restaurant has its interior done out in the Nazi colours of red, white and black.

Posters line the road leading up to it, featuring a red swastika carved in the name of the eatery.

How would you like to be greeted by a huge portrait of the Fuehrer himself looking stern but smart as you enter?

The cross in the restaurant’s name refers to the swastika that symbolized the Nazi regime. Actually, the swastika has its roots in ancient Indian Hindu tradition and remains a sacred symbol for Hindus. Nazi theorists appropriated it to bolster their central hypothesis of the Aryan origins of the German people.

Possibly the world’s only prison break in

As reported by news.com.au in August, other people could spend years carefully planning a breakout, but Detlef Federsohn, 23 wanted the exact opposite.

He missed prison life so much that he attempted to break back in after being released, having spent 2 years in Josefstadt prison for theft.

Unfortunately he was arrested when he was spotted on the roof of the jail.

Asked, he said: “Life is so much easier on the inside. They feed you, do your washing and let you watch TV, which I can tell you is a lot more than my mum does. So I thought if I could sneak back in I would blend in with the others and the screws wouldn’t notice.”

That reminds me of the infamous Kadus song of the early 80s.

The world’s oldest bank robbers

For man, it’s JL Hunter “Red” Rountree (1912 – 2004) who did his first heist at age 86. In all, he managed 3 successful bank robberies in 5 years.

Why did he do it? A bankrupt, he wanted to get his fortune back.

He died at age 92 in prison.

For a woman, possibly it’s a yet unnamed 79 years old.

She was arrested in Chicago after trying to hold up a bank with a toy gun.

She was wearing “a white visor that read “princess” and black sunglasses.

An FBI agent’s affidavit says she walked into a Bank of America branch and told a female cashier she could not speak very loud because she had just come from the dentist.

When the cashier leaned forward, the woman pulled out what appeared to be a gun and said: “Give me $30,000. My friend is across the street. And no dye.”

However, the cashier reached into her drawer and activated a silent alarm before walking away from the counter.

The robber waited a few minutes then walked out of the bank, ditching her trench coat as she left. A bank employee flagged down a police officer who arrested her outside.

The world’s most unusual bar (or the world’s most unusual marketing method)

On 7th August 2006, the BBC reported that the Rising Sun Anger Release Bar in Nanjing, eastern China is obviously feeling the heat of competition, hence the owner, Wu Gong, in a fit of brainwave, found the best way how to resuscitate his dwindling profits.

The best idea they came up with, and unbelieveably implemented is: to attract clients, we would allow them to beat up our staff.

“The idea is to release anger caused by problems of daily life”. Yeah right, and create a whole set of new problems in the process.

It lets customers “smash glasses, rant and even hit specially trained workers.” Basically anything goes, except burn the whole building down.

Interestingly, “most of his customers are women working in the service or entertainment industries.” I suppose that would include GROs and prostitutes.

The bar employs 20 men who obviously have been supplied with protective gear and physical training to prepare them for the job.

Another interesting trivia: clients can ask the men to dress as the characters they wish to attack. Let me guess, the most popular character is balding, wears a suit and constantly frowning.

Ron Mueck: the world’s premier human giant maker

Ron Mueck (b. 1958) is a world famous Australian sculptor working in Great Britain who has had his work displayed in art museums around the world.

Possibly his most famous work is Boy, the 15 feet tall giant, located at the Aros museum, Aarhus, Denmark.

Look at the detail of the boy’s foot. That’s what we call hyperrealist!

And how about this giantess in bed?

However, needless to say, the nature of much of his work is such that it will never be featured in Malaysian museums. There are naked or almost naked giants, anatomically correct and complete with bodily hair. There is also a sculpture of a woman who has just given birth, with her baby on her stomach. It was just too…. graphic.

The world’s strangest jewellery collection

Sebastian Buescher makes the world’s strangest jewelleries.

He makes them out of things people normally don’t associate with jewellery.

In fact, I think he makes them out of the very things that will prevent people from buying them.

I mean, would you wear a spider brooch ?

Nice gift box though.

If spiders are not your cup of tea, how about a scorpion ring?

Still no? Then I am sure a beetle ring would be perfect:

I don’t see any hands raised yet. So, apart from the odd “cool” purchases and novelty value, I don’t think this will top the best sellers list anytime soon…

Still, it would be perfect for a conversation piece.

See, I told you these are no ordinary jewelry.

Unfortunately, none of humans, although a few people have pledged their member, presumably posthumously.

The world’s worst thing to bet on

On 21st July 2006, The Age reported that while severely drunk, a 30 year old man in Latvia made a bet with his friend that for USD2360, he would cut off his penis.

And so he did.

I have also entered him as title contender for the world’s stupidest man.

Luckily doctors put him back together, John Wayne Bobbitt style. If not, he’d probably need the services of a South Carolina injury lawyer to get his money, and dignity back…

Possibly the world’s only panty / knicker snipper

The Star reported on 30th August 2006 that the panties snipper has struck in Kuala Terengganu. Again.

A pervert who breaks into homes to snip pieces of panties off sleeping teenagers has struck again.

His latest victims are two teenagers from Kampung Tanjung Jaafar in Gong Badak, near here.

Following the first scare two weeks ago, villagers had warned their daughters to wear track pants or slacks over their panties when going to bed and also to cover their body with a thick blanket to deter the hantu gunting.

However, this did not work as the culprit could deftly cut through the thick protection to reach the panty and slice out a piece from the groin area.

Since Aug 11, several teenage girls from Gong Badak, Pengkalan Arang, Taman Baiduri and Taman Desa Bakti have become victims of the “panty snipper.”

From descriptions given by them, the culprit is short and has body odour.

Initially, the suspect was thought to be a ghoulish figure or someone who was getting snippets of panty for black magic. However, police suspect that he is just a perverted sex fiend.

Siti Aisha Rashid and Nurfiri Razali, both 15, told The Star that the culprit broke into their homes several days ago while they slept.

Siti said she was asleep in the hall when she sensed someone touching her thighs, causing her to wake up.

“He had cut my tracksuit and was trying to pull at my panty,” she said, adding that she kicked him on the chest and he fled through an open window.

“I could not catch a glimpse of his face as it was wrapped in a towel. But he had bad body odour,” Siti said, adding that her fisherman father was at sea when the incident occurred.

She said a window had been forced open, and that she later found her cell phone missing.

Nurfiri, who lives next door, said she was fast asleep and did not realise that someone had cut her long pants and sliced off a piece of her panty until she woke up.

“I must have been hypnotised,” she said, adding that she was shocked to find a hole in her thick blanket.

I mean, why the extreme fetish with cutting holes in teenage girls’ panties WHILE they are wearing them, then disappear?

I thought they’d do *more* than that since he had the opportunity, you know…

And why not simply take them panties that are hung out to dry? Or take those in the cupboard? The point is, anywhere, except *this*.

Why take the extreme risk?

One more thing, the “bad odour” could be intentional.

He could’ve gotten this idea from 70s TV show “Number 96” which has a character with a similar hobby.

A hypothetical question: what would he do he finds his intended victim(s) wearing crotchless panties instead?

Possibly the world’s first policewoman who’s also a hooker

A policewoman in Auckland, New Zealand was discovered to have moonlighted as a prostitute.

Name and rank withheld.

Her reason is the usual “getting out of financial difficulties.”

The financial rewards are of course the main attraction: she could receive more than RM1,000 on a good night.

Amazingly, she was allowed to keep her job and only ordered to receive counselling.

Marijan Camber: the world’s greatest beer drinker

I first came across this news in 2004. I think it’s safe to say that he’s still da man.

Marijan Camber, 63 (if he’s still alive in 2006) averages about a crate of beer a day (24 x 385ml cans).

That’s about 9 litres. Heck, most people don’t even drink *one* litre of water a day!

Apparently he’s been at it for about 50 years, meaning he’s been drinking since the age of 10.

I estimated that had he been drinking all those in Malaysia, he could’ve broken another world record: most money spent on beer: about RM400,000. Good lord, that could buy a nice semi detached house in Sabah already.
